President Obama toured Robben Island, the jail Nelson Mandela was kept in for 18 years. He said he and his family are ''deeply humbled'' to visit the prison once inhabited by Mandela. He signed the visitors book, spent some time in the cell once inhabited by Mandela and visited the quarry where prisoners were required to labour. Robben Island which was once a prison house were resistance leaders were once kept is now a museum. More pictures after the cut.

South Africans Worry About Mandela and His Legacy

South Africans reacted with concern Sunday when they learned that Nelson Mandela's condition had worsened to critical, and while some said they hope the former president and national hero recovers, they also said they are tired of the circus surrounding his illness.

"He's old, he's lived a great life, they should just let him go," said Ronelle Du Toit, 27, branch administrator at a property company in Johannesburg. "Stop anticipating and asking for prayers to keep him alive. He's 94 – how many people live to 94?"

Nelson Mandela's Health Deteriorates

Nelson Mandela was in critical condition Sunday after a deterioration in his health, and doctors "are doing everything possible'' for him, South Africa's government said.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said that on Sunday evening the president had visited Mandela, the former president of the country who was imprisoned for nearly three decades as he battled the country's apartheid system of racial separatism.

If Nelson Mandela Were Nigerian

I found this an interesting read by Okey Ndibe. Enjoy.

If Mr. Mandela were a Nigerian, he would never have spent more than one week in prison… he would be identified as Triple High Chief (Sir) Barrister Nelson Mandela, GCFR, Tigbuo Zogbuo 1 of Igboland, Aare Baba Dudu 1 of Yorubaland, Alhaji Magajin Biu 1 of Hausaland…

If Nelson Mandela were a Nigerian, he would never be treated in a hospital within his country. God forbid! At the slightest sign of ill health, he would be airlifted to a hospital in Germany, the UK, the US, France, or Saudi Arabia. Any Nigerian doctor who comes close to him – much less touches him – would immediately be arrested and charged with treason. An SSS interrogator would ask the hapless doctor, “You dey craze? So you wan kill de man?”
